Random resolution changes of the nvidia driver sounds weird to me. Never heard of such an issue ...
The resolution changes are not random. They occur always and always in the same way. The only random thing is the distribution of the icons, if there were icons in the two most right rows of the desktop. As described earlier, in the very first moment when the desktop is displayed, a scroll bar appears on the right for a second or so, and then disappears /if/ there are /no/ icons in the two most right icon-rows of the desktop. If there were icons in those two rows, the icons get redistributed in a random way over the desktop, one icon below of the actual screen size, and the scroll bar remains until that icon is manually moved inside the screen size (which only works in the second attempt). All this happens after /every/ logout/in or reboot, constantly and reproducible, without exceptions. And all this happens only with the nvidia drivers, not with nouveau.
