This is the upstream bug
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=653845
and it looks to me like it is not a major sticking point for the upstream
developers or a result of some strong design decision. Indeed, there does not
seem to be one good point why it should be disabled even in that bug report.
My point about filing this bug here was that while I can't see how having the
date show by default might hurt anyone's productivity, not having it by default
means I have to carry over the mouse to the clock and click to see the date
which is a lot worse than if it were just there on the panel so i could see it
without moving the mouse around. Even with the tweak tool it is only easy for a
user to turn the date on only if he/she knows where to look for it; it is
definitely not intuitive to look for a simple date setting in some other
application which is not even accessible from the control centre or right click
on the panel clock, etc. I dearly hope this is reconsidered.
Thanks!
