I attach the log extract appropriate. The size is correctly identified (It is 8GB nominal) but this is later rejected. There is a very good discussion about exactly this problem at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/209483 although it is unclear from that whether the problem is with HAL or the kernel. http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/Kernel/2008-09/msg04410.html is clearer, though.
