Michael, for #1 I'm absolutely okay
for #2 the problem is keeping the bytes used as low as possible (live cd etc
...)
As grub2 can adjust a background to its screen size, (and that damn uefi vfat
is crap) couldn't we just use the ratio of the screen and use then one of the
predifined ratio (see the branding.sh script) then we just keep 4 or 5 images
in place of +20 at an 1.5MB average ...

The other way (we've exclude at the beginning of grub2 branding process) would
be to have the 4 images in /usr/share/grub2 bla ... and then use a cp to pick
the right ratio to /boot/grub2/background with the right screen dimension ?
But then this as to work with yast2 and be explained for those who don't use
it.
If you want to modifiy something you can branch the gitorious -art repository
grub2 was included now in it.
(sorry, I'm still on holiday for the whole week :-)
