Since I suffered another time this problem (but without any information in the
Xorg.0.log file, as well as in any other system log) when I have updated
firefox, I have noted that the huge memory usage happens when the rpm postin
script of both firefox and opera (in the original post) triggers the
gtk-update-icon-cache command.
Indeed, when I run manually the command "/usr/bin/gtk-update-icon-cache --quiet
--force /usr/share/icons/hicolor" as root, I have that X jumps to 2Gb of memory
usage. More precisely, during the execution of gtk-update-icon-cache,
/proc/<Xpid>/status contains
VmPeak: 2209880 kB
VmSize: 2191224 kB
while after gtk-update-icon-cache has terminated, it is just
VmPeak: 2209880 kB
VmSize: 230444 kB
I do not know why firefox and opera (and probably other packages) installation
induces an higher memory usage, but the problem seems to be triggered by
gtk-update-icon-cache
