We could define that SCSI sysfs should allow longer strings, but I'm not really sure if that would be the right fix.
And what would be a better fix? Currently HAL get the model info from udev or /proc/ide/*/model or from sysfs (*/device/model). Why is it a problem for the kernel to provide the full model string for scsi devices (maybe via a new syfs attribute to prevent break existing things).
