According to the pale moon developers, the Mozilla platform code is very sensitive regarding what optimizations can be used with which compiler. Switching to gcc 7 and keeping the custom optimization options, that used to work with gcc 6, was pretty risky,
ähm, switching a distrbution of 10.000 different packages to gcc 7 indeed is risky. Problem is that build failures are easy to spot but visual issues need either a openQA testcase or human testing I guess.
