As long as you use plain SQL newer psql frontends should work fine with older
servers. The only thing that doesn't work is shortcuts like \d, which are
expanded by the frontend into more or less complicated SQL to query the system
tables of the respective version.
There is not much I can do about this, but feel free to complain to the
PostgreSQL core team about not keeping the SQL for the backends of at least two
or three versions in the frontend when making changes to the system tables.
