I de-installed the NVIDIA packages with YaST as advised in comment #7. After
reboot the nv driver was loaded properly - see new attachments from comments
#8, #9, #10.
xawtv still does not work, the window remains black - the log of the shell in
which I started the program is in the attachment of comment #11.
I realised that when I terminate the xawtv window the VDR on screen display
flashes up for a small fraction of a second just before the window closes.
