The machine is the remote destination for most machines' syslog on campus.
Additionally it collects information from switches using telnet and expect,
driven by cron and it hosts a weather station via USB and the ftdi_sio for
recording temps and humidity in the server room.
So: no, syslog is not via serial.
telnet is used quite heavily, once per hour and additionally every 15 minutes
to about 100 switches each (using expect).
The ftdi_sio-connected weather station is polled every 5 minutes by
ws300pc(http://www.kisdndial.de/ws300/), which is a perl program not using
telnet.
The oopses and lockups continue to be there in 2.6.31.12.
My "live" system runs stable with 2.6.33rc5, which supports your statement
about the fix in 2.6.32.
