I have created /etc/modprobe.d/50-cdc_ncm.conf containing line options cdc_ncm prefer_mbim=N and it works again.
Assuming we are having the same problem, I can report that this workaround does not fix the issue for me. NetworkManager still does not recognize any 3G modem, and as a result greys out the configuration options for it.
Did you double check that "Enable Mobile Broadband" is checked if you *right* click on the Network Manager icon?
That is actually rather the point I am making, that box does not even appear at all.
