So, I've used the Kopete to got a link to a registration page. But I still
cannot reproduce your issue, because Mercury works perfectly for me. I've got
an OpenSUSE 10.3
$ cd ~/some/dir/mercury
$ wget
http://thebachman.info/images/stories/Mercury/Versions/mercury-messenger-1.9...
$ tar -xzf mercury-messenger-1.9.tgz
$ cd usr/share/mercury/startup/
/startup_linux.sh

## and some Gtk-CRITICAL asserts ...
And I can connect into the MSN account withouth any problem. It works from my
home directory, even from / (I've installed it using su -c 'cp -r usr/ /')
under the normal user. I've also tested the Fedora's rpm and mercury works too.
And without yours tricks.
I've tested the tgz package on both Sun's JRE - 1.5.0 and 1.6.0 (the Fedora's
rpm only on 1.6.0)
These versions of Java I've installed and used:
$ rpm -qa | grep java
java-1_6_0-sun-1.6.0.u3-0.5
java-1_5_0-sun-devel-1.5.0_update13-0.5
java-1_5_0-sun-1.5.0_update13-0.5
