Why do you think this is a HAL bug? There is a floppy device in the log from
comment #1:
4: udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/platform_floppy_0_storage'
This device provides already a floppy device with all mount/umount methodes you
need to mount the device. You may only need to give the correct fstype to the
mount call (fat32/vfat). I don't see why this should not work. There is no need
for a extra volume and as I already wrote in comment #4 there is no way to
detect if a media is in the device without the high risk to destroy the device
because of polling.
Btw. I don't have any legacy floppy device to test this.
