I believe that the xterm must have been in latin1 mode, otherwise utf8-mode
would be broken so that it could never print a german s-sharp...
The text in question came from a database running in utf8 land, sending its
output to an xterm in latin1 land.
The expected outcome in this case is to see some ugly two character sequences
where all the german umlaut character should be.
This works in konsole and web browsers, but not always in xterm.
I am aware that xterm is correct wrt to vt100 by discarding output sometimes.
I believe this to be an anachronism, which is rarely ever usefull today.
My vote is to become more user friendly to contemporary users.
