I was trying to link my own software which failed because it could not find -lmpi_cxx (as well as -lopen-rte and -lopen-pal). I had at that time openmpi installed. In /usr/lib64/mpi/gcc/openmpi/lib64 I had libmpi_cxx.so.1 but not libmpi_cxx.so. So I did a zypper --provides /usr/lib64/mpi/gcc/openmpi/lib64/libmpi_cxx.so which listed i | openmpi | A powerful implementaion of MPI | package A quick look in the forums however indicated that libmpi_cxx.so was only contained in openmpi-devel. After installing this everything worked. So I think that zypper --provides command should have told me openmpi-devel and not openmpi.
