Can someone please test this kernel:
ftp.suse.com/pub/people/trenn/10_3_do_not_identify_as_windows_os
This kernel does not have the ThinkPad blacklisting.
Instead it does not expose itself as a Windows OS.
ThinkPads have a lot Windows specific hooks.
It may be that those are the reason, this would explain why some models of the
same type show this phenomenon and some do not (Those hooks are preferably used
as workarounds in BIOS updates).
The above kernel is the recent 10.3 kernel (still you should not update but
install the kernel rpm (rpm -ivh --force kernel-default-xy.rpm), then you can
switch back to the your old kernel easily later and uninstall the test kernel
via rpm -e kernel-default-xy again).
You can monitor the temperature with this command:
watch -n1 cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/*/temperature
Then do e.g. a kernel compile with make -j4
or starting several glxgears should also help to bring the machine to its
thermal limits.
If it works, you should see temperature being about an offset of 20 degree C
lower than with the broken kernel.
I had two same ThinkPad models in my hands, the one had the shutdown syndrome,
the other had a working degree of 20 degree lower and never ever came near the
shutdown temperature...
This is still a guess, but if it's really that, this would help a lot to get
this solved forever and properly.
Thanks.
