Michal, I'm sorry for not replying sooner but I was dealing with other things -
including my Income Tax return. :-(
What I meant be "trivial" is that the problem would only affect those few
people like myself who are brave (stupid?) enough to run both 11.4 beta and
11.3 on the same machine and on the same /home partition. ;-)
I switched to 11.3 and installed the debug packages and Firefox started up
without any glitches. Had the usual suspects open in numerous tabs and windows
but couldn't get a crash. It reminded me of debugging Fortran programs decades
ago when putting in "write" statements would clear the fault - until you took
them out again - though at least that behavior would indicate the cause of the
trouble.
Looks like the problem may now have gone from "trivial" to "non-existent".
There have been a few updates to Firefox and Java since I started this so
perhaps one of them has fixed the problem - perhaps deliberately, perhaps
accidentally.
I'll be running 11.4 for most, if not all of the time now, so I'm happy to let
the status of this 11.3 problem to be switched to "resolved".
Thanks for your help,
Graham
