The problem is present also on a brand new Latitude E6410 with openSUSE 11.3
RC1, with the following Seagate hard-drive:
Model Family: Seagate Momentus 7200.4 series
Device Model: ST9500420AS
Serial Number: 5VJ68LZJ
Firmware Version: D005SDM1
User Capacity: 500,107,862,016 bytes
Device is: In smartctl database [for details use: -P show]
ATA Version is: 8
ATA Standard is: ATA-8-ACS revision 4
In this machine the recommended value for the power management settings for
acoustic management is, according to hdparm -I
Recommended acoustic management value: 208, current value: 208
however openSUSE ignores it and set it to 128 (exactly as on my previous
machine).
The load cycle count increases much quicker than there with the default value:
1180 cycles in two days, before I checked.
Setting hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda seems to fix the problem. I'll tell you what
happens in a while, after more certain information.
However, it would be nice that the appropriate settings would be chosen out of
the box, since this problem has been around for a long while :-)
FYI, the hdparm -I and the output of smartctl -a are attached. Additionally, I
move this to openSUSE 11.3 RC1, since it affects it too.
Best,
Alberto
