The load cycle count increases much quicker than there with the default value: 1180 cycles in two days, before I checked. Setting hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda seems to fix the problem. I'll tell you what happens in a while, after more certain information. However, it would be nice that the appropriate settings would be chosen out of the box, since this problem has been around for a long while :-) FYI, the hdparm -I and the output of smartctl -a are attached. Additionally, I move this to openSUSE 11.3 RC1, since it affects it too.
