I have had the acroread defunct process problem under OpenSuSE 11.3 with
Firefox 3.6 for a long time. I just upgraded to OpenSuSE 11.4 with Firefox 4.0
hoping the problem would go away but it is still there. My platform is x86_64,
currently Firefox 4.0.0-0.3.1. The piece of information not provided by the
person who opened the bug report is the parent process which you can see from
this process table listing:
~> ps -ef|grep 20717
goldino 20717 20688 0 15:28 ? 00:00:01
/usr/lib/nspluginwrapper/i386/linux/npviewer.bin --plugin
/opt/Adobe/Reader9/Browser/intellinux/nppdf.so --connection
/org/wrapper/NSPlugins/nppdf.so/20688-1
goldino 20737 20717 0 15:28 ? 00:00:06 [acroread] <defunct>
After looking at a PDF file in Firefox, I am *always* left with a defunct
acroread. Subsequent attempts to view PDFs result in a blank page. If I kill
the nppdf.so process (20717), then things start working again - until the next
PDF creates another zombie.
I am currently running Adobe Reader 9.4.2-1_i486 which provides a 32-bit
plugin. I wrap this with nspluginwrapper as follows:
cd /usr/lib64/browser-plugins
nspluginwrapper -i /opt/Adobe/Reader9/Browser/intellinux/nppdf.so
As mentioned above, this problem has existed for me since I started using the
64-bit version of Firefox under OpenSuSE 11.3. I also occasionally used a
32-bit version of Firefox and did not have this issue using the native 32-bit
acroread plug-in. So I am thinking this is an issue with nspluginwrapper.
