Within /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession the arguments provided by the display manager will
be handled. If any language information will be provided this is scanned and
the LANG variable will be set. Beside this the exec_login() shell function
will execute the final xsession/xinit script with the users login shell and
those shells (bash/tcsh) will source /etc/profile.d/lang.sh or
/etc/profile.d/lang.csh.
(Compare with /etc/profile line ff 299 and /etc/csh.login line ff 250)
IMHO it may help to add a line
set -x
on the very first lines of /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession and then simply have a look
into the log files ~/.xsession-errors and /var/log/Xorg.0.log
