--- Comment #12 from Jean Delvare
Can we get the bug not fixed to work correctly in the auto mode ? (I am not complaining but just trying to find out if it is really unsolveable. The machine cools correctly in windows and Thinkpad being developers' laptop etc. should let linux run good)
Have you compared power consumption between Linux and Windows? How fast does the fan spin under Windows? Michael seems to assume that the problem is that the fan doesn't spin fast enough under Linux. I think the problem is that the machine generates too much heat under Linux. 5000 RPM is really fast for a computer fan, and even more so for a laptop fan. I never had a fan spinning that fast in any laptop of mine. I did not have a fan spinning that fast in any of my desktop computers since 1998 or so. Only servers and powerful workstation still sometimes have fans which are that fast. The fact that disengaged mode drives the Thinkpad fans above the maximum speed they can reach in controlled mode is nothing new, it has always been the case. AFAIK the speed difference is only a guarantee that the fan will not wear out too fast and that cooling will still be efficient when the fan ages and/or dust accumulates over time. You are not supposed to use full speed mode AFAIK. Also note that, according to Sankar, this is a regression, previous versions of openSUSE (or SLED?) did not have the problem. So I don't think you can just blame the firmware. Maybe a kernel bisection would help, but it takes time. I'd do if if I had a T400 at hand, but I don't. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
