Aha! openSUSE 13.1 still suffers from this bug, but only if the first
initiation of sleep after switching on the machine is by closing the lid. If
instead the machine is put to sleep manually the first time (e.g., using
Kicker), and woken up, then sleep/resume by closing/opening the lid works
normally thereafter. The bug reappears after poweroff and poweron, even if the
system is hibernating.
Another thing I've noticed is that, when sleep is invoked by closing the lid,
the screen flickers briefly before the machine falls into sleep. The crash
occurs some time during that flicker, while the screen is blanked.
