Thanks for your efforts and reports.
Some notes on your issues mentioned above:
- The alsa-firmware must have nothing to do with your device. It's for special
devices that require external firmwares. So, this must be a coincidence.
- The OSS mixer can't be better than ALSA one simply because OSS maps only the
subset of ALSA mixer elements
- The "audio" group is helpful only when you *always* get the permission error.
Usually the permission is set up additionally via hal-resmgr using ACL.
I think this is rather GNOME-related issue than the generic sound problem.
Reassigned to GNOME maintainers who may have a better clue.
