Each time when a check for new mail is run, an Alert window pops up that displays "STATUS: failed" (nothing more, nothing less). No messages are logged on the IMAP server and nothing on the client either. Fortunately, there is a Thunderbird icon in the pop-up window, otherwise it would be impossible to know which application generates this warning. The variable $PHYS in the script is assigned the value $(grep '^physical id' /proc/cpuinfo | sort -u | wc -l). On my cpu this means: For both cores there is the same physical ID, thus sort -u leaves one line. wc -l returns 1, as there is one newline character. However, line 40 says: if [ $PHYS -gt 1 ] || [ $PROC -gt 1 -a $PHYS -eq 0 ] ; then thus irqbalance isn't started though I have an SMP system. Changing line 40 in /etc/init.d/irq_balancer to if [ $PHYS -gt 1 ] || [ $PROC -gt 1 -a $PHYS -eq 1 ] ; then helps, it is now possible to start irqbalance via the inid.d script, while it returned "unused" before. This is because texttops creates invalid ps files, and ghostscript cannot parse them. Verbose cups logging showed this ghostscript error: /undefined in 12,000 The numeric format is bad, it is supposed to be 12.000 instead of 12,000. But I use hungarian locale (hu_HU), and the decimal point is the comma character there. Although the user_xattr parameter is set for ext3 file systems in /etc/fstab, beagled still throws the following warning: Beagle WARN: Extended attributes are not supported on this filesystem. Performance will suffer as a result. ..indicating that the CONFIG_EXT3_FS_XATTR kernel option is not set. During startup cpufreq tells me the processor is not supported and the gnome cpufreq tells the same. According to uname I have a i686 kernel installed so it's not the known problem where a i586 kernel is loaded.
