[ In case this might matter, a particularity of the system is that the processor (i7-1250U) has performance and efficiency cores. Another particularity is that I have an external nvidia GPU for computational purposes, so I have nvidia drivers installed, but not the x ones. When hooking up to that box I had difficulty getting the intel video of the laptop to work so I had to add i915.force_probe=46aa for that. ] The concrete problem I have is that konsole, where I do most of my work, is at times unworkable: I have to wait some time (can be 1 sec, can be ~15 secs) to see what the effect of my keystrokes are. Other application suffer more or less from the same, but it's neglectable. But with konsole it's so painful, I've started using gnome-terminal, which works perfectly (well, at least in terms of immediately showing me what I typed or showing the other tabs). What is actually happening when I press a key (or switch between tabs) is that the refresh is done all over the screen, in random horizontal strips here and there, and after seeing that progress for several seconds, we have the end result. AFAIU this is called tearing, but I'm not sure. I've searched a bit online about similar problems and gone through various iterations of changing settings, so at this point I've got: - desktop scaling to 100% (I had set it before to 150%, and read that it could help to set it back to 100%). - compositing: enable on startup -- off - compositing: allow applications to block compositing: on - Scale method: accurate - Latency: force lowest latency - tearing prevention: full screen repaints - keep window thumbnails: only for shown windows There may be something obviously wrong with any of these or the combination thereof, I have no clue. As a result "systemctl reload sshd.service" killed the SSH connection I was using to manage the server. As I understand it, without systemd the active SSH connection would not be killed, leaving a chance to fix things. However with systemd, every sshd process is killed when the main sshd terminates (it seems).
