I have an HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15t-eb000 laptop with Windows 10 already installed on it. I want to make this into a dual boot system with OpenSuSE as the second OS. When I tried to use the OpenSuSE installations for a USB stick I run into a serious problem when the installation process reaches the point where it wants to set up partitions on the disks. (My laptop has a 1TB Optane SSD drive with 32Gb Optane memory which is some sort of very fast cache.) At this point I get the following error messages - "An error was found in one of the devices in the system. The information displayed may not be accurate and the installation may fail if you continue." The "Details..." button shows - "cannot delete MdContainer" I can only choose "OK" to dismiss this error message. The partitioner only shows two disks, one for the large SSD drive and one for the smaller Optane memory. No partitions within these drives are shown and any attempt to add or modify the drives results in an error message saying the device is busy. At this point the attempts to install Leap 15.3, Leap 15.4, and Tumbleweed fail and I have to give up. TW takes under 4s to reach multi-user. 15.2 takes much less than the two 15.3s, but much more than TW, to same target. kmod-static-nodes seems the biggest delay in the 15.3s. Every installation except one 15.3 is on SATA SSD in UEFI. The odd one is on NVME except for /boot on SATA, and it has its own unshared ESP there. All are being booted from TW's custom.cfg. The same result. It seems that it's the USB controllers are the only components affected, so far. Mousepad works properly, but I'm not use to it. I have to constantly remove and load xhci_pci & xhci_hcd, as root. rmmod xhci_pci rmmod xhci_hcd modprobe xhci_pci modprobe xhci_hcd Mouse works after that for a short time. Nota bene: Devices work properly under openSuSE Leap 15.2 x86_64, kernel 5.3.18-lp152.106-default (old HP Pavillion). It works fine with the graphical LUKS password. But when you boot with nomodeset boot option, the boot process hangs without asking the LUKS password. This didn't happen on openSUSE Leap 42.2 / 42.3. And when I upgrade only plymouth packages on the Leap system, it starts showing the same problem. I also posted about this here: https://reddit.com/r/openSUSE/comments/u693vm/no_such_file_or_directory_whe… , and at https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=215864 The files that it happens to are a few GiB in size. It doesn't fail immediately, rather when I read it with dd status=progress the first time it reads a bit into the file (a few MiB or over a hundred MiB, depending on the files, but it seems to always be the same distance for the same file), and then throws "No such file or directory". On subsequent reads, it gets through the whole file. Only, it doesn't really, because the resulting content is wrong. It's the correct length, but past a certain point the it's all zeroes. So it never truly reads the whole file, but only sometimes throws an error (when it's not in disk cache?). The same file always comes out correct with ntfs-3g. Also, not sure if related, but after I've mounted and unmounted a few times with ntf3 and ntfs-3g, ntfs3 starts throwing errors saying: "mount: /windows/d: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error." and refuses to mount it unless I add -o ro. ntfs-3g still mounts it, and ntfs3 mounts it after rebooting. The filesystem has compression enabled, in case that matters (though the files should be incompressible, as they're gzipped).
