Through investigation, it appears that at-spi2-core is not being installed along with Nautilus. Installing it manually results in Nautilus generating thumbnails and directory previews much faster, as expected. Some people have reported switching from RAID to AHCI in BIOS helped, for me it didn't change the situation much (if at all).
