If bundled readline is used, they work. For this reason I suppose it's a libedit bug rather than a mariadb one. When, in that window, the "More details" tree view is expanded, a textbox appears with additional information. At that point, when the window with the error message is resized the textbox retains its original size instead of being resized as well. The situation is much more complex than I realised! My interpretation of that document is that one day you will have to bite the bullet and fix any scripts that require Python2 without specifying it. But I quite understand why you want to put off that unpleasant task. The solution for me is very simple: I have just put alias python='python3' in my $HOME/.alias file.
