If custom java (e.g. Oracle) is installed and used via the "alternatives system" then /etc/profile.d/alljava.* wouldn't set the correct JAVA_HOME. So the user is in a situation where they have all links pointing to their custom java but the JAVA_HOME env var is set to whatever OpenJDK was installed before that. This causes nasty issues with all sorts of java tools and applications. Please find attached patches that add support for determining JAVA_HOME via /etc/alternatives/java if exists. I finally managed to boot the images from this run in qemu on x86_64 using the hints and scripts from comment 8 with a few changes that should not affect the results: 1. graphics output was changed to vnc, because I ran the VM remotely. 2. I changed the passwords of the users 3. I changed the serial console to stdio so that I have a shell besides the X session. Unfortunately I was not able to reproduce the bug there. I tried it with the script from comment 2 and also by creating a text label manually in an interactive shell, and the text always got rendered as expected. My system (after update) is:- Operating System: openSUSE Tumbleweed 20210620 KDE Plasma Version: 5.22.1 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.83.0 Qt Version: 5.15.2 Kernel Version: 5.12.10-1-default (64-bit) Graphics Platform: Wayland Processors: 4 �� Intel�� Core�� i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz Memory: 15.5 GiB of RAM Graphics Processor: Mesa DRI Intel�� HD Graphics 620 The problem is that when I play music (through VLC media player or audacity) everything is fine until I plug in earphones. When the earphones connect, there is only silence. The 'phones worked fine until a recent update. PulseAudio Control (Volume Control), shows output and under 'Output Devices' tab when I switch from headphones to speakers, I hear music. Back to headphones, silence. I ran alsa-info.sh when playing through speakers, then connected the headphones and ran alsa-info.sh again. The outputs are attached. The headphones work fine on this laptop using windows so probably not hardware problem.
