Pulseaudio uses the dummy output and no hardware output is shown as alternative. Another strange thing I noticed is headphones are muted when plugged in. In testing plugging in headphones mutes speaker and unmutes headphones and unplugging does the reverse but the system is in state with headphones plugged and speakers unmuted. I don't know if some timeout fires when the system is suspended or the suspend has nothing to do with it and I just happen to check sound on resume.
