Since this happens only on boot and is not exposed to the net, we have no reason to believe that there is any issue here. Also, that bug has been around since the inception of Perl scripting module. The options in Preferences => General => Startup => Load virtual terminal support is enabled. After checking Geany mailing list, this feature needs libvte9 which is installed on my system. Using plain "rsync" will not help, because it doesn't know about subvolumes, not does it care about shared extents. As a result, the "rsync" copy will be fully functional, but cannot benefit from the features I want to use on a btrfs file system. I then found out about "btrfs send ..." | "btrfs receive ...". OK, sending multiple subvolumes might help, but it just errors out: This is what I did: # cd /var/lib/docker # for vol in btrfs/subvolumes/*; do > btrfs subvolume snapshot -r $vol ${vol}.snap > done # btrfs send -v btrfs/subvolumes/*.snap > /nobackup/tmp/snaps Here are the results: At subvol btrfs/subvolumes/059d43faad13c2517a8c0da86082874f3cbaf322258279b41fc60c969df07e30.snap BTRFS_IOC_SEND returned 0 joining genl thread At subvol btrfs/subvolumes/2ddc98493f831b930fa10bd4accdd03103016f2c569197755a8787fcdbf5154c.snap ERROR: parent determination failed for 0 Apparently the second subvolume cannot be added to the image. I tried all sorts of variations to manually add a "-p" sequence to the command, but it doesn't matter what you specify, "btrfs send subvol1 subvol2 ..." always fails with the same message. When you send/receive each subvolume in a single pass, one eventually succeeds and then has a whole bunch of subvolumes on the target (which is on a btrfs file system, of course!), who do not know anything at all, what they have in common - hence they use much more space than in the source! Hoping that "duperemove" could remedy that however does not work, at least not to the extend one should/would hope. Here are some numbers: SOURCE: btrfs filesystem df /var/lib/docker/ Data, single: total=1.00GiB, used=310.18MiB System, DUP: total=32.00MiB, used=16.00KiB Metadata, DUP: total=512.00MiB, used=105.88MiB GlobalReserve, single: total=16.00MiB, used=0.00B TARGET: btrfs filesystem df /var/lib/docker/ Data, single: total=2.00GiB, used=655.54MiB System, DUP: total=32.00MiB, used=16.00KiB Metadata, DUP: total=512.00MiB, used=110.64MiB GlobalReserve, single: total=32.00MiB, used=0.00B As you can see, the copy uses more than double the space of the source.
