The work-around, as others have reporter, is to disable compositing, then run the Kernel update. Then I make sure the symlinks to vmlinuz and initrd are good and that menu.lst is correct. Basically, this could all be fixed if any kernel updates requested the user suspend compositing and not continue until that was done. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. compositing turned ON 2. YaST2 update kernel 3. hwinfo hangs; if on kernel update, mkinitrd cannot complete and no initrd is created. The system will not boot, obviously, and big trouble occurs if the old initrd was deleted in the process. Here is what i think happened: mkinitrd currently only requires /usr/bin/perl (and perl-Bootloader) which is part of perl-base. but its perl-scripts use use Getopt::Long; use Pod::Usage; which are part of "perl" and not "perl-base". if during installation, mkinitrd happens before perl (because the package manager by coincidence resolved the dependencies that way), the installation of the mkinitrd-RPM fails with the above error message. so an explicit dependency on perl (or the specific perl modules) in the spec might be a good idea to prevent this. The problem was that the installer (probably) didn't notice those changes and put an old entry for swap partition into fstab. See attached Yast2 log, line 2582. There should be /dev/md125p7 instead of /dev/md126p7. My guess is also that this is related to the fact that I'm running OpenSuse on RAID 0 (which hasn't been created by OpenSuse). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Start OpenSuse 12.3 installer (on a machine with RAID 0) 2. Go to expert mode in partition setup 3. Delete all proposed partitions and create your own setup 4. Confirm and proceed rest of the installation as usual Actual Results: Wrong swap entry is put into fstab => swap doesn't work.. Another result is that OpenSuse hangs during the startup process trying to mount the missing swap partition until time limit is exceeded, i. e. the boot up process is very slow. That was the original symptom which lead to this discovery. Screen painting, button pressing, and text character entry lag for many seconds, rendering kate totally unusable. In this case, both local and remote operating systems are openSuSE 12.3 x86-64. Kate works as expected when the remote OS is older than 12.3. kwrite also experiences some character echo lags, but not to the same degree as kate. Other KDE applications may also be affected? konsole works okay. Network traffic load as measured by tcpdump: 1. Starting kate until screens painted and ready for input: 33,855 packets 2. Entering one key locally until the echo is painted: 106,637 packets Hosts were on the same subnet, connected with Gig-E Ethernet. This problem was reported to the opensuse mailing list and was reported as being reproducible.
