One of them is download.opensuse.org/repositories/Java:/packages/openSUSE_12.1 Nobody will check all the new keys every time (how can I do that ?!). This makes the repository signing rediculous. So either avoid changing the keys permanently or remove the PGP-signing completely. It used to be patchy but became stable under the openSUSE 11.4 release, albeit rather slow. I upgraded the machine to 12.1 with zypper dup and I can rarely get it to boot successfully anymore. After a process of elimination it was this card causing the problem. Consistent kernel panics are encountered on boot. Under systemd these can occur at any time from just after GRUB up until the last system tray icon has loaded on the desktop (XFCE in this case), but under systemv it consistently occurs a few seconds after the lxdm login screen arrives (I have also tried lightdm). I was advised to check /var/log/messages but I don't see anything relevant there. All that happens is a random line gets cut off halfway through before the next set of timings starts relating to the following boot. I can't see any consistent problem. These drivers were integrated into the kernel many releases ago (though have probably received some updates), so this seems like a regression. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot the system with wifi card installed 2. Kernel panic occurs (reproducible consistently at login screen under SystemV, at least on my slow machine) Note that I can successfully reach the desktop about one in every twenty or so boots (hence I've had to remove the card). If I get this far, once the final system tray icon loads in XFCE the system remains completely stable and the wifi works (though the transfer rate is slower than optimal, as with previous openSUSE releases). The USB drive booted properly and installed properly with no errors. I changed the BIOS to select UEFI first and then the USB was able to boot. However, after finishing the installation and rebooting the computer, there was no boot loader that would allow me to chose either windows or openSUSE and Windows loaded automatically. The web says that there should be an update to Grub 2 so that it can actually load openSUSE. But I am not as technical and this is over my head right now. Please help. It also occurs on openSUSE 12.1 with kernel 3.4, but not with kernel 3.3 or the regular kernel 3.1. Using a USB UMTS stick, I can no longer establish a UMTS data connection with NetworkManager. I am going to attach relevant parts of /var/log/messages and /var/log/NetworkManager, but here is the analysis: 1. The system recognizes the UMTS stick and NetworkManager actually shows the connection under "Mobile Broadband". In fact, it also shows the provider (Vodafone) and signal strength. 2. When I try to establish the connection, that fails in the middle. 3. Aug 14 16:13:29 tuna NetworkManager[6305]: <warn> pppd pid 7116 exited with error: pppd options error and Aug 14 16:13:29 tuna pppd[7116]: unrecognized option 'wwan0' 4. Replacing /usr/sbin/pppd with a script that captures the actual invocation of pppd, we see the following: nodetach lock nodefaultroute wwan0 noipdefault noauth usepeerdns lcp-echo-failure 0 lcp-echo-interval 0 ipparam /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/PPP/1 plugin /usr/lib64/pppd/2.4.5/nm-pppd-plugin.so 5. The documentation of pppd reads SYNOPSIS pppd [ options ] : ttyname Use the serial port called ttyname to communicate with the peer. If ttyname does not begin with a slash (/), the string "/dev/" is prepended to ttyname to form the name of the device to open. It occurs to me that amidst all the options in the invocation above, pppd does not recognize wwan0 as a ttyname. Indeed /dev/wwan0 does not exist on my machine. 6. So I replaced /usr/sbin/pppd by a script that invokes the real pppd as above, just replacing wwan0 by ttyUSB3.
