There is no error message during the upgrade. Just rebooting after the upgrade will result in a system not able to boot anymore. If you do not have a copy of your old files: bad luck (had that happen before)! as during the upgrade, the old modules and initrd and kernels are deleted. Work-around: Get a copy of menu.lst BEFORE upgrading. After upgrade and before reboot create the missing initrd manually: - just "mkinird" will fail - execute "mkinitrd -d /dev/md0" with md0 being the / device, this will successfully create the missing inirds Restore the saved menu.lst and edit it to match the new kernel version Reboot. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Whenever there was a kernel security update on machines with / and /boot on separate md mirror raid devices, this has happened. Note: I have not tried a single / on a mirror raid nor have I tried other raid levels. Actual Results: New kernel is put in place, initrd(s) are missing, all boot entries in the grub menu.lst file are missing. Unfortunately, all old kernels/initrds/modules are deleted during the upgrade. So there is no way to boot anymore. Expected Results: Create the inird properly and modify the menu.lst file appropriately. Possibly leave the last known working files on the system as a backup and only delete them later (to revert). I have a plain old spinning drive connected as sdb. Grub is installed on sda, as is OpenSUSE. After hitting enter in grub, the boot seems to start. After a few seconds, loads of SATA errors are written to the console, and it will not find the root partition. I have attached a screenshot of the errors. (Scratch that, there seems to be a bug with making an attachment... the file picker will not show any files, and I can't type the path manually... See this link instead: http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=59449& ) My system worked fine until I decided to install WinXP (go figure...) to the sdb drive. Just to make sure that sda would not get botched by the install, I kept it disconnected during the whole install. When I reconnected it, OpenSUSE would not boot. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot the system. Actual Results: The SATA I/O errors starts spewing and the system will not boot. Expected Results: A regular boot. Booting up the OpenSUSE install DVD and trying to do a rescue will not work, I get the same errors there. Connecting the SSD with a USB cradle to another OpenSUSE 11.1 computer WILL work, so the SSD is fine. Windows XP DOES recognize the SSD, so no problem there. A PCLinuxOS LiveCD will ALSO recognize the SSD. It does not matter if I use AHCI, RAID or regular IDE mode in BIOS. I have moved around the SSD to different SATA ports and even to a separate SATA controller card. I then burned the SLES 11 GA DVD with K3B and it worked fine.. and the media check was OK. This has been tested so far with two different machines. Steps to reproduce: 1) Install openSUSE 11.1 on a system with a DVD burner 2) Download SLES 11 GA DVD 1 ISO image 3) Open Nautilus to the location of the DVD ISO 4) right click the DVD and select to burn with Brasero It will Burn completely but the media check fails when trying to use the DVD just burned to do an install. Now, as soon as I install openSUSE, I experience this problem: the file operations dialog will freeze when I try to delete an ISO file, or a few thousand file directory like a source tree. Nothing on the progress bar, ever. If I cancel it, the dialog stays up. This will happen if I delete and then try to empty the trash, or if I shift-del from Nautilus. In the former, the trash icon is empty when I reboot. In the latter, I reboot and find still existing the directory I ordered deleted and a text file in it, but the ISO within is gone. That said, I reinstalled because this partition somehow became full. I can't imagine a legitimate reason for because it's just openSUSE and home (which was 1.7GB).
