In openSUSE 12.1 it takes three times as long, independend of using systemd or old init system. The reason seems to be kdm is started much later in boot process, I'm missing the old earlyxdm init script which started kdm very early. Investigating nvidia driver, I realized gnome-shell was getting a "Unable to find suitable fbconfig for the GLX context" when loading gnome-shell --replace. LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose /usr/lib64/mesa-demos/xdemos/glxinfo was showing direct rendering was not enabled. After doing ldd on glxinfo I realized it was using libGL.so.1 from Mesa. So I tried LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/X11R6/lib64" /usr/lib64/mesa-demos/xdemos/glxinfo | grep ender direct rendering: Yes Voila. So I tried LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/X11R6/lib64" gnome-shell --replace And now I am writing this bugreport from a working gnome-shell. Plasmoid has not worked correctly for Mobile Broadband configuration in the past. Work-around is to use the nm-applet for GNOME. I did that, and the change took and hardware is online. This error looks to be entirely caused by the failure to ask for root authentication. I do not remember the Wizard working correctly in the past (I may be mistaken here). During kernel development, I had copied a .config from linux-2.6.* to my home, which consequently led to a variety of weird errors in KDE4 (-> "major" problems like print failing silently). None of them gave a slightest hint to the real cause, which is my point here. I'm uncertain whether this is limited to akonadi; feel free to adapt appropriately. Did not find a way to enable it. So maybe it is not "here"? I think it is very useful to have not only the percentage, but some concrete values. 50% on one computer is different to most others. I read about the problems with non-technical users, who might be confused, if it suddenly changes from 20min to 15, but I do not think that it is very problematical, because you have both values btw. If I try to burn a single DVD, the drive 'locks up' during the second burn, no longer responding in any way, to any software or hardware commands (ie. even the eject button stops working) A reboot gets the drive operational again. I've therefore filed this bug as I suspect a kernel issue The behaviour is perfectly reproducible on my hardware, but I'll be uploading a hwinfo promptly. I changed that to networkmanagement enabled, but found out later in the test of the network that the network did not work. So I choose Back, a few times, and reverted the choice to not using networkmanagement. Despite it showed that networkmanagement will not be used, the test of the network connection failed again and it showed that still the network was managed by networkmanagement. Only after completing the installation I was able to return to the traditional ifup method. Having just one Ethernet device in the system, also makes using networkmanagement not available for managing that interface. Starting networkmanagement only makes management of VPNs available. So it would be better in such circumstances not to present the possibility of having networkmanagement as an option. So when I click on a text file in dolphin(log file to be exact -> warn/message), not kwrite starts in a KDE session, it is beawer that comes up. The default applications should keep the same in KDE even also GNOME is installed in parallel on the system. Program versions are of openSUSE12.1 install dvd. The updated kernels won't load fully although grub is finding and loading the kernel image. mkinitrd complains about ext4 module (amongst others) not found. I added the ext4 and a couple of other dependency modules to the mkinitrd config, with no improvement. This is now a security issue as I can't update the kernel to the latest versions. PC is a Samsung nc110 notebook. Happens on fresh install with ext4 partitions. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install OS 11.3 from DVD on x86_64 with /boot & / partitions ext4 2. Upgrade with latest (or any upgraded) kernel 3. Reboot Actual Results: Load fails after grub has loaded kernel. After investigation I have found that the problem is related to unexpected string format passed to function func_sort() (function.c). At first stage this function parses passed character string using isspace() function in order to count number of tokens. wordi = 1; while (*t != '\0') { char c = *(t++); if (! isspace ((unsigned char)c)) continue; ++wordi; while (isspace ((unsigned char)*t)) ++t; } Then there is allocated an array 'words', which will be sorted. words = xmalloc (wordi * sizeof (char *)); Then the same string is parsed using another function find_next_token(), pointers to token are stored in the previously allocated array, etc. The find_next_token() function is using another method to split a string into tokens, i.e isblank(). char * next_token (const char *s) { while (isblank ((unsigned char)*s)) ++s; return (char *)s; } char * find_next_token (const char **ptr, unsigned int *lengthptr) { const char *p = next_token (*ptr); if (*p == '\0') return 0; *ptr = end_of_token (p); if (lengthptr != 0) *lengthptr = *ptr - p; return (char *)p; } In case the character string contains any space characted different from 'space' or 'tab' character we may have different number of tokens at each step: - used for allocated the array - stored in array In my case the string passed to func_sort() contains *new-line* characters, which cause that number of token used to allocated is lower than numbers of tokens stored in array. I don't know yet how this string has been produced. I could get the preconfigured profiles (Performance, Powersave and agressive Powersave) via Defaults button, but I could not get rid of the existing strange entries. The only use I see for this entry is the gfx menu position (that is not that important), because removing it do not prevent grub from booting. I added a new sata drive on sata 1. No kernel problem, the drives where seen as sda (sata 0), sdb (IDE), sdc (sata 1). At first the boot system hanged. When I could boot (tricky - from rescue dvd) 12.1, I noticed the sata 0 drive was now (hd2,X) when it was before hd0 and yast instructed to give a new config still gave hd0. on the same system, 11.4 setted hd2. I want also to notice that it's not possible to verify this setup (the hdX,Y) in yast. This root (hdX,Y) option is not visible in the yast interface. It starts dhcpcd. Dhcpcd calls if-up.d scripts after it gains an address. if-up.d/21-dhcpcd-hook-samba calls /etc/init.d/nmb force-reload. It calls /bin/systemctl force-reload nmb.service. It stalls until network script times out (WAIT_FOR_INTERFACES) because /sbin/ifstatus-dhcp returns 12 and says "is just beeing set up".
