The use of startproc to start the process is maybe breaking it, because it only seems to care for the file /var/run/fail2ban/fail2ban.pid and not the file /var/run/fail2ban/fail2ban.sock . If there is only /var/run/fail2ban/fail2ban.pid, or if there are both files, the service starts normally. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. zypper in fail2ban 2. touch /var/run/fail2ban/fail2ban.sock 3. service fail2ban start 4. ps aux | grep fail2ban Actual Results: fail2ban doesn't start because of the existance of the file /var/run/fail2ban/fail2ban.sock but no /var/run/fail2ban/fail2ban.pid Expected Results: that the file /var/run/fail2ban/fail2ban.sock is deleted if there is no /var/run/fail2ban/fail2ban.pid, and starts fail2ban (because if there is no /var/run/fail2ban/fail2ban.pid we can expect the deamon is not running). At first libpcap was failing in factory, so it made sense. But libpcap started compiling in factory 3 or 4 weeks ago. I don't know why perl-Net-Pcap i586 factory can't find it to build against. fyi: I have a package in security that needs perl-Net-Pcap to run properly and I just want to make sure it starts building so it can be pushed into factory/12.1 fyi: I'm requested to be a maintainer for perl-Net-Pcap, but I don't know how to resolve this. So I typed /usr/bin/chkstat --system and that worked as expected. Note this is a security issue, because part of an administrator's security configuration will be lost. When launched manually gives this error: pam-modules-11.4-3.4.1.x86_64 requires libxcrypt-crypt_blowfish >= 1.2, but this requirement cannot be provided (true for several days now) just now zyppr up do a lot of updates with no error. but kpackagekit still ask for a glibc update (the well known error in passwd hash) and this is what gives the error. Why didn't zypper up do the work? Very often, when an application needs root privileges, the windows that asks for root passwd opens in the background, under the other windows, remaining unseen. Such window should force foreground. Even if I know the trick, I often miss it because it not always obvious that root pass is mandatory. Example below Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.open the document print status windows (printer switched off, a document in the queue), for example from the printing cups kde application. 2.select the queue, clic remove, a windows show "do you really want to remove", clic yes and wait... 3.the root pass windo is open under the printing app (the two of them on the centrer of the screen) Actual Results: the user don't undrstand why the job is not cancelled. It starts perfectly with the failsafe entry. The problem come after the X start, just after the first blink of the screen. The computer stop completely responding (no mouse, no keyboard). I couldn't figure out what option of failsafe is relevant because when I try to remove one, most of the time X don't start at all. after start, fbdev is used for 2D and swrast launched (but noted: no 3D) in sysinfo:/ Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. as a side note, it could be better to reboot the first time (during install) in failsafe. For the install it's perfectly ok and at least the install complete is most situations. When I first tried to edit one of my connections and I didn't notice the authentication dialog a KDE policykit, I simply clicked the "edit..." button again and all the information I got from plasmoid-NM was that I have "insufficient privileges" to edit secret data. The crash occurs in sprintf. Rich Coe is our hero, because he was able to isolate the problem wrote a small program that shows the crash. See the attached file on how to reproduce the problem. I think the issue has also a high security impact, because programs that rely on a working sprintf might use this hole to overwritte arbitrary memory. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Compile the attached program 2. Run it. Actual Results: It crashes.
