On a fresh install the /usr/bin/latex etc links are not installed, on a version change from 64->32bit they are left pointing to x86_64-linux. My solution was to, from fresh, (a) install texlive-bin-latex 64bit then (b) revert to 32bit then replace /usr/lib/texmf/bin/x86_64-linux with a symbolic link to /usr/lib/texmf/bin/i586-linux Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: The summary is quite precise, basically the texlive packages are a bit broken under these circumstances. Since it uses zypper for searching for the packages and it doesn't run as root or with some setuid wrapper, it cannot do repository refresh. If step 5) is replaced with (removing and) adding the repository, the refresh is done properly. I did not find a call to this module but something different: https://build.opensuse.org/package/view_file?file=gnome-packagekit-fate3024… (line 72) The Gnome applet checks for the existance of the file /usr/share/applications/YaST2/suse_register.desktop to find out if it runs on openSUSE and then calls the external application "smoltGui". But this file belonges to the package yast2-registration which _is_ already dropped in Factory and thus openSUSE 11.3 as well. So on every 11.3 the applet will assume to run on a non-openSUSE system and never call "smoltGui". Please use a different method to find out if the current system is an openSUSE or not. BTW. I just found out that this bug is valid for the KDE-updater-applet as well.
