Installation went smoothly up to the "Installation of the Bootmanager" stage. Then it hung with the progress bar staying at 94%, the mouse pointer still the animated busy cursor, and the GUI unresponsive. (Tested by trying to switch tabs.) tty1 showed a screenful of identical messages: error: cannot open Package database in tty2 had a usable shell prompt. "ps axf" showed the hanging process lineage ending in (hand copied): /bin/sh /boot/perl-BL_delayed_exec /bin/bash /usr/lib/bootloader/bootloader_entry add default 2. /usr/bin/perl /sbin/update-bootloader --image /boot/vmlin sh -c ZYPP_READONLY_HACK=1 zypper -qx --no-refresh pd zypper -qx --no-refresh pd -i grep isbase="1" Killing the grep process had no effect. Killing the zypper process made the sh process exit with it, and three new processes sh, zypper, and grep appeared, identical except for their PIDs to the last three ones above. Killing the new zypper process again made the installation proceed normally. Reproducible: Didn't try Steps to Reproduce: 1. install openSUSE 11.2 2. install additional kernel.org kernel 3. run update installation of openSUSE 11.3 M4 Actual Results: Step "Bootloader Installation" hangs at 94%. Expected Results: Step "Bootloader Installation" completes smoothly. This happened twice, from both the GNOME x86_64 live-CD and the KDE x86_64 live-CD. I have a feeling that even other do as well. 3.Killing the plasma-desktop or log out takes the cpu usage back to normal. Actual Results: On x86-64 it slows down the computer but still workable. On VIA motherboards still workable even with 0% cpu idle. On Intel computer not workable at all. Expected Results: Not run wild. This has been reported before and still not solved. Work around is not to use KDE at all. That includes everything that might use any problematic KDE component. The .xsession-errors file grows. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot the computer and login a user. 2. Set the "Dynamical scaling" by means of "kpowersave" or execute "cpufreq-set -g userspace" as a root. 3. Observe the CPU frequency by means of either "kpowersave" or, as root, "tailf /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/cpuinfo_cur_freq" or "powertop" (or anything else). 4. You see the maximum frequency. Then just switch windows and you see that the frequency decreases after each swith. 5. You may load the CPU by a symbolic calculation or something like that and you see that the frequency decreases to the hardware minimum value. Actual Results: The frequency depends inversely on the CPU load. Expected Results: The frequency should depend progressively on the CPU load.
