It has been completely tied to /proc/meminfo's 'Cached:' field for ages now. We've also had this SwapCached field in meminfo available for at least 5 or 6 years, maybe since the 2.4 kernels came around. SwapCached has been excluded from this tally for a very, very, long time and I don't think it should get added in now. I do appreciate what you're trying to do here which is accurately account for any memory in the system which might be used as a 'cache' and might be reclaimable. That's a laudable goal, but it changes some very long standing behavior and I think it needs to get reverted. 'Cached:' is also *NOT* necessarily _reclaimable_ memory. It can represent things that have been locked into memory in various ways. Adding the reclaimable slab into it is further confusing. I noticed this issue in one of the "enterprise" distros. Is there a way we can go about getting this reverted in those? This also isn't integrated into upstream procps. Starting X using this one, the screen turns black as before. After switching to the X console and back, I noticed error messages about invalid arguments of the backlight control.
