Touchpad: synaptic Problem: Entire tuchpad area (except for a 1cm/1cm top left corner is configured as scroll area. Up to now, these fonts were iso8859-1 encoded (single-byte fonts, latin1 encoding). Now in 11.0, they are all iso10646-1, i.e. two-byte Unicode fonts. These old applications (one example: Cadence 5.1.41, Display Resource Editor, see attached URL for screenshot how it looks like) certainly can't cope with two-byte fonts. The solution is to revert these aliases (especially fixed, which is also the default font if no font name is given on XQueryLoadFont) to latin1 encoding. The question here is: Why has this been changed? These simple fonts haven't been used by recent apps for quite some time (I think Emacs 21 is probably an exception, but then Emacs 21 is not really that recent, and Emacs 21 actually knows how to handle the situation ;-), so the applications expect to find the same old font as they always did, otherwise they break. New, unicode-aware applications won't use them, anyway (they use Xft and Type1 or TrueType fonts). I leave the severity to "normal", as I don't really know how to rank it. It only affects broken applications. I guess there can't be done anything to avoid that but then we have to make sure that it doesn't set the full version path but only the /usr/lib/xulrunner-1.8.1 one. Steps to reproduce: Assuming no instances of acroread are running (e.g. no acroread browser plugins or processes) 1. As root issue the following: echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches As a regular user run the following 2. Start a terminal and run top -d 0.5 3. Press alt-f2 and run acroread . Expected results: Updates to the desktop to continue happening. To be able to click on other programs and use the desktop as acroread is loading. Actual results: Updates (e.g. top inside the konsole) stop happening. Desktop is unresponsive, mouse pointer still moves but clicking on other windows does nothing until acroread has finished loading. How reproducible is the problem? Providing the caches are cleared every time it is reproducible every time. Additional information: Using ionice -c7 acroread and nice -19 acroread makes no difference. Regular Xorg (not XGL) is being used. Reproduced on a Pentium 4 CPU 3.06GHz + Radeon 9600 using the open source driver and a dual core Pentium D CPU 2.80GHz + NVIDIA 7600 using the binary only driver. Switching to a virtual console and using command line apps works. Might be a xorg bug. With GTK_IM_MODULE=xim, the scim input method *can* be enabled by Shift+Space. But it doesn’t work right. One can see correct Japanese in the popups shown by scim when converting phonetics to Chinese characters. But the predit string shows garbage which seems to resemble Arabic. In addition to this problem, that procedure resulted in https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=388773 which has preliminary steps to reproduce. Since enabling, I must boot to runlevel 2, and only when it completes, do init 3. If I don't, I must wait insufferably (approximately 3.5 minutes) to get a prompt. Last messages on screen before the pause are: Starting HAL daemonacpid... acpid: 1 client rule loaded Once the wait is over, the next messages (according to boot.msg) were: done Setting up loopback interfaces: lo lo IP address: 127.0.0.1/8 IP address: 127.0.0.2/8 Checking for network time protocol daemon (NTPD): unused done eth0 device Intel Corp.... eth0 IP address: 192.168.... Checking for network time protocol daemon (NTPD): unused Initially, the same problem existed booting to runlevel 2. To avoid the insufferable wait, I had to boot to single, whereupon I discovered ntp was set to start in runlevel 2. Only after setting ntp only in 3 & 5 using chkconfig was I able to boot directly to runlevel 2 without a hang.
