I am _NOT_ using NetworkManager, but the traditional ifup method. The problem seems to be, that the wlan interface is not properly brought up/down when I use the kill switch. Testcases: 1.) I boot my system with the kill switch turned off. Using ifconfig I can verify, that the wlan0 interface is not there. Next I switch the kill switch on and check using ifconfig again, the interface is still not there. I have to manually call 'rcnetwork restart' to bring the wlan0 interface up. 2.) I boot my system with the kill switch turnen on. Using ifconfig I can verify that the wlan0 interface is up and working. Next I switch the kill switch off. Network isn't working anymore, I can't surf the web any longer nor connect/ping other machines in my local network, _BUT_ the wlan0 interface is still listed using ifconfig and has it's IP address still assigned. 2.a) I have to manually call 'ifdown wlan0' to enter the expected system state. 2.b) If I switch the kill switch on again (skipping 2.a), the wlan0 device is still listed via ifconfig and has it's IP address assigned, but it isn't working. Digging deeper, I discovered it's not a Python problem at all, but a bug in glibc that is simply reflected in Python. I have attached a simple C program illustrating the bug. On systems with a working getservbyport() syscall, it should print the following: andrew@virt-apache-02:~$ ./a.out found service daytime for port 13/(null) found service daytime for port 13/tcp found service daytime for port 13/udp On 10.3, the call fails: andrew@test-app-01:~> ./a.out not found in services: port 13/(null) not found in services: port 13/tcp not found in services: port 13/udp With an 11.0 alpha 3 live CD, it's broken in a different way: andrew@linux:~> ./a.out found service spr-itunes for port 0 found service spr-itunes for port 0/tcp not found in services: port 13/udp You can also test for the problem with two lines in an interactive session of python: >>> import socket >>> socket.getservbyport(13) This will print either 'daytime' (success) or an exception (socket.error: port/proto not found). OpenSUSE 10.3 (and 11.0 alpha3) are the only OSes I've found this to be broken on. From my testing smaller sizes work as expected, so I narrowed it down to numbers less than 1079009912 seem to always work, and greater always fail. However I suspect there is a race condition since at exactly 1079009912 it is about 50/50 work/fail and I don't see anything special about that number. Every thing goes well and the repository is added. However, none of the packages from the plain rpm directory are read; indeed, when view by repo is selected, the corresponding repository shows no packages at all! Plaindir repositories are very important for computers with slow or no internet connections. Identical problems when repository is added from zypper.
