I have absolutely no idea for what fb.modes is actually good for. We don't have it in initrd, too. If it's not there, DirectFB figures out the modes itself, which seems to be more reliable. One time I was able to look in /proc/acpi/thermal_zone and the critical trip point was a negative number. Now I have disabled the thermal driver (hope I am not killing my machine) by adding 'off=1' as an option to that driver in modprobe.d. The other way to get around it is booting with acpi=off, but that is obviously not ideal. What is wrong here, is the ACPI from BIOS bad? The patch was applied after 2.6b3, which is precisely the version present on SLES11.
