Steps to reproduce the problem: (with 3D Acceleration enabled) 1. Start KDE. 2. Press the right mouse button on an empty piece of the desktop and choose "Configure Desktop..." 3. From the list at the left choose Screen Saver. Open the "OpenGL Screen Savers" item and select Carousel. Note the image in the preview window. 4. Click on the Setup button. Drag the new KXSConfig window so you can see the preview in the Kdesktop window at the same time. Expected results: Parts of images at the back of the KXSConfig preview being obscured by surfaces near the front of the scene to not be visible. Actual results: Occassionally a surface at the back of the scene will be drawn in front of a surface which should be occluding it. How reproducible is the problem?: It is reproducible every time. Version information: SUSE 10.1 (both x86_64 and i586 versions) Mesa-6.4.2-19.12 xorg-x11-server-6.9.0-50.30 Two different Intel cards exhibited the same problem. (Please tell me if you are interested in bug reports with working workarounds like this. Primarily for Windows support, MacOS supports a dual GPT/DOS partition scheme in which a DOS partition table is created that mirrors the GPT partition table as well as possible (at most four primary partitions; no extended partitions possible; first primary partition reserved for EFI). The mixed GPT/DOS partition setup is useful for dual-booting MacOS and Linux: grub (version 1, the only usable version to date) doesn't support GPT partition tables, and relies on a DOS partition table to exist. Parted supports GPT partiton tables, but not the dual GPT/DOS partition scheme. Therefore, whenever parted modifies the GPT partition table, it wipes out the DOS partition table. There is an external tool, gptsync, which creates a dual GPT/DOS partition table from a GPT partition table. This tool can be used to fix things up again after parted. Problem is that by default 32bit kernel reports that initrd image should be loaded just below 512MB boundary. This splits 896MB lowmem block into two pieces - one from ~8MB to ~500MB (our tests show that there is something around 502MB of memory here) and one from ~512 to 896MB (384MB large). And unfortunately when there is more than 63GB of memory then pages array grows beyond 502MB, memory allocation fails, and system panics and then triplefaults as panic occured too early. Our (VMware) tests confirm that same workaround as for Ubuntu works for your products as well - changing grub's config to do: uppermem 40000 kernel --no-mem-option <kernel_image> <andargumentsasalreadypresent> instead of kernel <kernel_image> <andarguments...> as long as initrd is smaller than 30MB. Is there any reason why your kernel suggests recommended initrd location at 512MB? Using either 800MB or 40MB would work, as then there would be 700+MB contiguous block of physical memory for pages array.
