When comparing numbers, both operands have to be numbers unfortunately, or you would just replace a syntax error with a runtime error. Up to now I had to recompile the "sendmail" binary with SOCKETMAP support by adding | appdef(`confMAPDEF',`-DSOCKETMAP')dnl to | devtools/Site/site.config.m4 manually. The value gets empty because the script checks the wrong file (libgtk.so instead of libgtk.so.X), don't you think that fixing the code so that it doesn't generate empty version numbers is a better idea?
