Hello all, It was some time since I posted to this list, but I have a question. Blinux doesn't support that many braille displays and it's very frustrating that one needs to have a serial display for installing openSUSE. Well, one could use the Live CD, but I prefer braille. When I last checked the repositories I could not find BRLTTY. Has this been added or are there any planns to eventually replace the old Blinux with BRLTTY? Is anyone else interested in this as well? Best regards, Christian -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: blinux+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: blinux+help@opensuse.org
Hello! Yeah, I want to have brltty too. I want to have suse as accessible as debian or fedora, when you can use brltty at boot time with any display you like, and you can choose whether you want to install from the live cd or to have a text install. I don't like that you need a serial display in order to install suse from the normal cd or dvd, there are almost no motherbords with serial ports left, and the new braille displays are usb displays. Also, suse blinux is built on brltty, so I don't understand why it doesn't become updated. /Kristoffer ----- Original Message ----- From: "Christian" <christian08@runbox.com> To: <blinux@opensuse.org> Sent: Saturday, March 14, 2009 1:00 AM Subject: [blinux] BRLTTY in openSUSE 11.1? Sbl support usb display as well (read my last mail).

Have you added a feature request to support your brailledisplay? Sbl supports usb display as well (read my last mail). If your display is not supported please add a feature request for this. Use novell's or opensuse bugzilla. Regards Halim -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: blinux+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: blinux+help@opensuse.org

halim Sain already mentioned that this is not true the usb support works currently for handytech, alva, and papenmeier
Also, suse blinux is built on brltty, so I don't understand why it doesn't become updated. not really build on brltty - one of the first svl version was a fork of brltty - yes but since the last 10 years - I added many features that brlty does not have
specially for ncurses based applications and customization like keymaps, profiles speech filters etc. if you have any feature request - just let us know and we can discuss it here thanks marco

Hello! Ok, if you chould add usb support for my tieman braille voyager I would be very grateful. Also, if you could make blinux compatible with other distros as well it would be great. /Kristoffer ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marco Skambraks" <marco@suse.de> To: "Kristoffer Gustafsson" <kg84@dreamwld.com> Cc: "Christian" <christian08@runbox.com>; <blinux@opensuse.org> Sent: Saturday, March 14, 2009 1:03 PM Subject: Re: [blinux] BRLTTY in openSUSE 11.1?

Of course you can install Suse with both the text-based and the graphical installer. Moreover, SBL is able to handle text mode YaST much better than Brltty would, because SBL is able to track attribute cursors, which Brltty can't do. And yes, SBL supports USB braille displays as well. So why replace a console screenreader with a lot of important and useful features with another screenreader which lacks some of them? (automatically loading application profiles, soft-cursor tracking and better speech output support, just to name a few.)

USB/serial converter do exist and SBL can handle USB connected braille displays too. Henning -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: blinux+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: blinux+help@opensuse.org
Hello! Well, as I said. the only thing now I need is support for tieman braille voyager. Is there an english blinux sight somewhere? I've searched but I only found german. /Kristoffer ----- Original Message ----- From: "Henning Oschwald" <h.oschwald@gmx.de> To: <blinux@opensuse.org> Sent: Saturday, March 14, 2009 6:45 PM Subject: Re: [blinux] BRLTTY in openSUSE 11.1?

I have installed opensuse 11.1 using my braillestar 40 connected via usb to my laptop. This laptop doesn't have a serialport!!! Sbl supports serial/usb/bluettoth connections. have you filled a feature request for this problem that blinux doesn't support your braile display? Maybe the support can be added?
Well, one could use the Live CD, but I prefer braille.
Your informations are simply wrong. Opensuse can automaticaly detect supported brailledisplays conected via usb/serial. ports.
When I last checked the repositories I could not find BRLTTY. Has this been added or are there any planns to eventually replace the old Blinux with BRLTTY?
Replacing blinux will break yast accessibility. There are many features like attribute cursorhandling missing in brltty. You can't use brltty with yast. This means brltty can't be used to install opensuse with braille.
Is anyone else interested in this as well? No, please not.
As said before brltty doesn't support most of the powerful features which sbl has since 10 Years. 1. speech-only-setup 2. useful Attributehandling 3. Customizable keymaps 4. customizable Application based profiles 5. speech pronounciation stuff Brllty works only with systemcursors which makes it in my opinion not usable with ncurses based applications. Simple applications like alsamixer are not working well with brltty. Using pine/mc/centericq etc shows the problem more detailed. sbl is still maintained and I added many features specially for speech-only navigation we got very positvie feedback about sbl in conjunction with kbdsniffd which braille display do you use? thanks marco

Hello Marco and all, Oh, I apologize if I was wrong regarding the USB support. I am using a Humanware Brailliant 40 braille display which is set default to use the Baum protocol. If I changed it to use the Handytech protocol on my serial port I was able to get braille working. But I will try to do the same on a USB port and see what happens. Blinux should support the Baum variant as well which BRLTTY also supports. I have an older braille display, the Powerbraille 40 from TSI. That is also supported by BRLTTY and should also be supported in Blinux from my opinion. If one chooce to install the latest factory version of opensuse with the help of the LiveCD, how can one later activate Blinux? Best regards, Christian On 2009-03-14 at 12:54 Marco Skambraks wrote:
