[opensuse-artwork] RFC: Website Redesign (Recolor) That meets new branding guidelines
Hi All, I thought it was about time we looked at the website again, ever since the 13.2 banner has been on the landing page it has bugged me due to how much the colors clash with the green and orange rectangle. I don't have the time to redesign the entire website + wiki + forums and everything else, but I figured i probably do have time to go through the stylesheets and recolor the website to match the new branding guidelines http://opensuse.github.io/branding-guidelines/ so that is what i have done. If someone is in the process of redesiging everything nice work and go for that instead. There is 1 content / design change i would like to make to the front page and that is to add the top navigation bar present in the wiki and forums, i have always found it hard to navigate the rest of the site from the front page, so i guess others do as well and i think that that will help. I have done some mockups using the firefox inspection tools that allow messing with and replacing stylesheets. I use a wiki as my notepad, and the list of changes i have made can be found there, http://notes.simotek.net/doku.php?id=projects:opensusee:website, I have also created css files that can be pasted in over the exisiting ones so that you can try out the changes, although they will disappear as soon as you navigate to another page. I was wondering if there are any test servers running mirroring the sites that i could get access to that would make life much easier as would knowing where all the source code lives. I think the source files for the themes are here: https://github.com/openSUSE/opensuse-themes And for the main page, I think they're here: https://github.com/openSUSE/landing-page If that was what you were looking for. If you create pull requests with the changes, you should perhaps let the people on the opensuse-web list know. I'm not sure how close attention anyone is paying to the stuff that only happens in the repos. Great initiative, by the way! Hi, My SUSE colleagues worked on a new landing page during the last hackweek but I am not sure where it lives in github. I'll find it on Monday when I get back in the office and can find someone who knows and post a link. -- Kenneth On 31/01/15 12:12, Simon wrote:

Hi i have a bit of feedback on that site I think it is a good start as a marketing page for people who have never used openSUSE but i think we need to look at the aim and target audience of the site. We need to remember that the website has 2 distinct target audiences, one people who have never used openSUSE or don't know what it is and two exisiting users looking for doco / forums etc remembering that this is also the default home page in firefox on new installs. The main issue i have is how far i need to scroll to find the links to the wiki and forum hidden at the bottom in the sitemap I'll come back to this later. I also don't really like the green logo and its background color (maybe its just me I never really liked that green) but It doesn't seem to fit the branding guidelines that well (Contrast it against the branding guidelines page or any of the screenshots on the screenshots page). Which brings me to the next issue I have, the lack of a screenshots page its about the first thing I look for when I go to try new software. It would be really nice if we could auto generate a nice looking screenshots page from the wiki (maybe a second copy of the page with a different stylesheet). Or atleast a page in the same style as the landing page with a few select screen shots. The site also seems very commercial / corporate in its look and feel for a community distro, yes it has a big section on community but that doesn't really show the community. Having said all this i thought i'd go have a look at the community to see what they do and maybe steal some ideas. The fedora website seems like a better example of what is being aimed for https://getfedora.org The first screen you see is very marketing oriented but by the time you scroll down the height of the screen you hit all the info users would be after. Mageia http://www.mageia.org/en/ has a nice looking landing page and the menu's at the top provide easy navigation for users easier then fedora, but it is lacking in describing what Mageia is to new users. Elementary seemed ok (not that impressed with a youtube video at the top) but it seemed like the first screen you view has enough info for existing users and scrolling down provided good info for new users this seems like it may be a good way to go. I also had a look at mint and sabayon because they have always had good design teams but both websites seemed pretty crowed and not that great. I'll also put out a mention to Arch https://www.archlinux.org/ , who need to worry a lot less about marketing and there site seemed very well designed for there users but i think openSUSE needs more of a marketing focus. I think there are a couple of things that could be done, One either add some navigation links at the top or middle to make it easy for users to find what they want, or two have a "marketing page" maybe accessible from something like whatisopensuse.org and then a "user focused" page with a similar design at opensuse.org with a easy way to swap between the two. Then there's any other ideas that you fine people can come up with. Having said all that its still better then what i could do i'm more of a UI Designer then graphical designer, coming up with a excellent website is obviously hard work by virtue of the fact that there are only 1 or 2 distro's that have one. At the moment i don't think i'll have the time to pick up that landing page and get it to a state i'm happy with, but i'll continue to investigate the recoloring and time and family permitting hopefully i'll get somewhere in the next couple of weeks. Even if we get a new homepage the wiki and forums etc could do with the work still, hopefully, in the next hack week the work can be picked up on again. We had a team some time ago from a couple of people who wanted to revamp our main page, but the effort had a few bumps so we didn’t get a new page. I thought also that Henne was working or did work on a new page that could also be used and could be tweaked to have these color mix. I personally think that doing color changes is a good thing, but we could probably do a whole new page altogether. I could design one but I honestly don’t know all the technical details of what we have now. I know I can make one in HTML/CSS/JAVASCRIPT. Would anyone be interested in getting some proposals? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

Actually, the version mocked up is 'wrong' - Manuele has been working on a new version but he's away for a few days..this conversation hasn't come up at a great time for him to talk about this.. but, I don't see the point of restarting the process of revamping when we already have a working proposal
We all agree the current design is bad and needs at least a recolour We have a proposal that's wayyyyyyyyyyy more effective than just a recolour Why not use it and make it better?
That is certainly a better idea, and i would be happier if that went ahead, I was unaware of active work on a new version, and until now no one had said the new proposal was being actively developed until now. Realistically I don't have the time to bring the current proposal up to scratch but if someone else is actively working on it then thats great and theres no need to do the recolor. To put some perspective on effort and time, I only spent around 2 hrs doing the recolor while i had young kids running around. Once the new front page is done i'm happy to help get the wiki, forums etc, Matching. Hi i have a bit of feedback on that site
Cool, thanks for taking the time to evaluate this. But please understand that this is very much work in (non-)progress. It represents in no way the 'result' of our work during hackweek, but it's merely a very rough first draft implementation. That said, let's discuss your feedback.
I think it is a good start as a marketing page for people who have never used openSUSE but i think we need to look at the aim and target audience of the site. We need to remember that the website has 2 distinct target audiences, one people who have never used openSUSE or don't know what it is and two exisiting users looking for doco / forums etc remembering that this is also the default home page in firefox on new installs.
AFAICC this makes 3 audiences ;-) No seriously, in our discussions during hackweek we also talked about target audiences. BTW we have recorded this discussion on our trello board [1] https://trello.com/b/1gb3O03N Of course also this use case came up.
I also don't really like the green logo and its background color (maybe its just me I never really liked that green) but It doesn't seem to fit the branding guidelines that well (Contrast it against the branding guidelines page or any of the screenshots on the screenshots page).
Like I said, the current state is merely a very rough first draft. There wasn't any work done on branding, colors, interaction, UX or numerous other things. That's also the reason why this wasn't announced or anything....
Which brings me to the next issue I have, the lack of a screenshots page its about the first thing I look for when I go to try new software.
Screenshots are one of the features of the landing page we have identified.
The site also seems very commercial / corporate in its look and feel for a community distro, yes it has a big section on community but that doesn't really show the community.
That one you have to explain to me. Why does the community section not "really" show the community?
Having said all this i thought i'd go have a look at the community to see what they do and maybe steal some ideas. The fedora website seems like a better example of what is being aimed for https://getfedora.org The first screen you see is very marketing oriented but by the time you scroll down the height of the screen you hit all the info users would be after.
Whom do you mean with "users"? I guess you mean people that already participate in our community? Those are very secondary for this page. We rather want to do one thing (present the distro and the community to people who don't know it yet) and one thing well instead of having another mash up like we have right now.
Actually our current idea is to have 2 different pages. One that can serve as default page in firefox and as landing page for existing users and the general landing page on www.opensuse.org.
coming up with a excellent website is obviously hard work by virtue of the fact that there are only 1 or 2 distro's that have one.
That's why we think it would be very good to have one.
hopefully, in the next hack week the work can be picked up on again.
For sure. Thanks again for your feedback! Henne -- Henne Vogelsang http://www.opensuse.org Everybody has a plan, until they get hit. - Mike Tyson -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

Currently the designated place for this is the footer. Might be we can beef up the descriptions in the community sections to include those. We have to think about this... Well i'll make my standard comment, you remembered the link to the wiki but forgot the link to the forum at the top :-P Other then that i like the idea of merging the 2 concepts, I think in terms of content your suggestion adds a lot of what i thought was missing, without cluttering or making it look messy. Phew, many. From the design perspective I like to color selection, it looks very polished. I also think it's very calm, not sure if I like this or not. I don't like the imagery, it doesn't convey what this page is about. And I'm not very fond of the parallax effect, I think it's getting boring.
From the content perspective I miss a description of the apps our distribution brings, this is the crucial feature, and I miss a description of our project. And don't understand the search section. However I like the larger integration of the shop and the box.
Technically I don't like that it isn't responsive... That's whats came into my mind.
