Hello List and one question
Hello Everyone. I don't know how many people are on this list, but I'd like to say hi. My question, while downloading the 8.2 Beta 9 Iso Files.... I know the basic difference between SLES 8 and Suse Linux 8.2 Pro. Which one is better to be used on a dual Opteron based system? The SLES because it's officially supported? or the Beta9 because it's more recent and maybe has more optimizations for the X86-64 platform? Sincerely, -- Thorsten Wolf mailto:t_wolf@gmx.de

SLES8 is better because it's officially supported and better tested and in general more stable. The beta is just for your private playground. The updated compiler and kernel are available for SLES8 too. -Andi

Not that much yet since this list was so far not announced publically.

good move ;-)

Regarding kernel and compiler: - The beta9 kernel is a bit newer than the SLES8 kernel but we will soon release a new kernel for SLES8 that is newer than beta9 and even better. - The basic compiler on SLES8 is GCC 3.2 but we have the optional gcc-33 package (will be installed in /opt/gcc33) that should give the same performance as the 8.2 GCC compiler. SLES8 is much better tested and has official support. If you have an Opteron system and like to evaluate, feel free to use 8.2 and then buy SLES 8 ;-) Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj SuSE Linux AG, Deutschherrnstr. 15-19, 90429 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126
