SuSE AMD64 XP Pro Equivalent
The recent discussion of Enterprise Server vs. 8.2 Beta has got me thinking. Here are my needs as a user. I want an AMD64 operating system for a dual processor workstation. I want a stable platform that is compatible with the 32-bit closed source software my university has site licensed, such as Stata and Matlab. I do not want some experimental platform with new thread libraries (aka RH9) that breaks compatibility with closed source software. I do not need to pay for a "server". Basically, what I want is XP Pro for AMD64 Linux. :) Enterprise Server is apparently tested and supported and more likely to work with 32-bit closed source programs like Stata and Matlab (has anyone tried this?). But it cost $747 for 2 processors! Meantime, 8.2 Beta is, well, a beta for a free product that has who knows what compatibility with these programs. I'm willing to pay some amount of money for an OS that works without too much hassle, but not $747. Is there a product for me? What would the people on this list suggest? By the way, does either ES or 8.2 Beta support SATA drives right out of the box? Jeremy

I can just tell what Andreas told already: The 8.2 is not tested that much (It works, I use it for daily work), And you won't get support, as it's a beta product (Except the usual way, eg. over this list). Especially the 32bit functionality is not very well tested. (Bug reports welcome, especially about missing 32bit libs) At least, OpenOffice (32bit) works.

SLES8 does, I tested right yesterday (3Ware SATA Raid 8500) As 8.2 beta 9 has the same kernel, it probably works as well.

I think what I want is SuSE Linux Desktop for AMD64. But the existing x86 version costs $499 for five clients, although you can buy an "installation kit" for $100. I think once I get my machine I am going to have to go with the beta of 8.2 until something with a more reasonable price structure shows up here. I realize it is hard to make money with open source software, but thanks for trying. :) Jeremy

Might be our next Professional release in autumn.

SLES8 is the only supported version out their. Both SLES and 8.2 support execution of 32-bit programs, so your software should continue to work without problems.

Both support the 8500 - for some others there's no Open Source driver available and therefore it's impossible to do anything right now, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj SuSE Linux AG, Deutschherrnstr. 15-19, 90429 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126
