I have been using SuSE 9.1 on a Dual Opteron system, and I have run into a few problems with some applications. I just want to see if these are issues experienced by others or if its something in my setup. GAIM : * cannot connect to yahoo OpenOffice : * Locks the system hard. Requires a reboot * This is not the version that SuSE ships, but one that i had downloaded and installed on an nfs share. I can try to install the SuSE supplied version on a local drive if that helps. Java Applications : * Lock the system hard, Requires a reboot * Using the latest sun JDK (1.4.2_04) and also the Blackdown 32 bit versions cause the same thing. It works fin for a while and then the system locks up and i have to press reset. * Applications tried : - eclipse M9 - oXygen XML Editor 4.0 * small java programs that i have written work fine, but then they are not long running. FVWM : * I was not able to move the windows of some java applications ( again eclipse) nor of OpenOffice. I tried the SuSE supplied version, the latest 2.5.10 version and finally got things back to normal with the 2.4.18 version. I have also installed the 32bit verson on my laptop and i haven't seen any of these problems. I know probably none of these are SuSE specific, but just want to see if other have encountered this and if they have solved the problem. My system specs : MSI K8T Master FAR mb 2 Opteron 240s 2G memory 1 SATA drive (system installed here) 1 IDE DVD-RW 2 IDE HD (work area) nVidia graphics card The system is not a dual boot. Also, the SATA drive shows up as /dev/hda. Should it be /dev/hda or /dev/sda? I haven't had any problems with the drive aside froma lot of annoying messages in the log file : hda: drive_cmd: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } hda: drive_cmd: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError } But i see these for all drive but the DVD-RW and from what i have read it appears i can ignore these. Thanks, edward
I just updated my bios to the latest available for the motherboard : v1.31B. OpenOffice still locks up the system. I can get it to happen by opening word, selecting on a menu and then dragging the mouse over each item in the menubar. edward On Mon, 31 May 2004 02:39:33 +0200 Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de> wrote:

Most likely K8 errata #94. Update your BIOS.

Ask your motherboard vendor for a BIOS fix for errata #94 then. It's very very likely that. -Andi
Another thing to keep in mind is to test if problem went away with a newly created login. Sometime there can be some old setting from error-states that continue to error out even though the original has been fixed. The only way to test apps that store settings is to create a new login, login with that newly created one, and test the program. If it works now, there is also a setting that is corrupted.... I tried the openoffice with the new login and get the same results. Thanks for the suggestion though, because there is no telling what is in my home directory after all these years... edward On Tue, 1 Jun 2004 07:40:51 -0600 acsguy@wtp.net wrote:

I am still sort of waiting on the fix from the MB vendor. They sent me a rom, but i cannot burn it because the flash program says there is a bios checksum error on th file. I sent a response back to them asking them for further assistance. Thanks, edward On Mon, 31 May 2004 13:59:19 +0200 Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de> wrote:

Issued by AMD, found on www.amd.com, regarding high-order address bits when switching to/from SMM.
Thanks, edward

No, that's a different one. See http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/2575... That's the revision update (= bug list) for current Opteron and A64 CPUs. Issue #94 in this list is what I'm refering to. -Andi
